BUILDING SERVICES INTERN - SUMMER 2013
The Building Services Department at WSKG Public Broadcasting has a summer internship opportunity available for a high school senior or college student interested in Building/Facilities Maintenance, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
Location: Vestal, NY
Time Period: May - August (tentative dates based on the needs of the station and the selected student)
Hours: 120 hours maximum
Description:
This opportunity will expose the intern to training in the Building Services Department. The intern will work closely with the Building Services Coordinator, who oversees the operation and maintenance of WSKG’s main facility and grounds, and supervises all related mechanical and control systems. General responsibilities encompass assisting the Building Services Coordinator as needed in a work-based learning opportunity. Specific responsibilities will focus on developing a system to track the facility’s heating and cooling equipment to aid in projecting replacement and repair needs. This will require the intern to, in part, inventory and tag heat pumps, and then enter data into an Excel spreadsheet. WSKG's internships are learning experiences and are unpaid.
Qualifications:
The intern must have availability on weekdays between 7:00 am to noon, and able to work 10 to 20 hours per week. Eligible students must have reliable transportation, be self-motivated, and able to use a computer. The successful candidate will have experience with Excel spreadsheets, and be comfortable using a ladder to access heat pumps in the ceiling and on the roof.

HISTORY RESEARCH PROJECT INTERN - SUMMER 2013
WSKG Public Broadcasting has a summer internship opportunity available for a student currently enrolled in a Liberal Arts degree program at an accredited two- or four-year college. This internship opportunity will allow the student to become involved in varied aspects of researching and developing content ideas for long-form historical documentaries and for a new history and heritage series. In addition, the student will be exposed to and become involved in the behind-the-scenes activities of the television programming and production department for this region’s public broadcasting station.
Location: Vestal, NY
Time Period: May - August (tentative dates based on the needs of the station and the selected student)

Description:
The intern will work closely with an award-winning production crew and be given specific responsibilities within the scope of his or her coursework. Possible responsibilities may include (1) Internet research to find and evaluate possible history content, (2) phone research and interviewing to develop story ideas, (3) on-site visits, interviews and/or taped sessions with historians or other individuals to contribute to content, and (4) other duties in support of the project. Schedule of hours will be flexible and may include some nights and weekends, but the intern must have availability weekdays during the normal business hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. WSKG’s internships are learning experiences and are unpaid.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH INTERN – SUMMER 2013
The Education & Outreach Department at WSKG Public Broadcasting has a summer internship opportunity available for a student currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited two- or four-year college in the field of K-12 Education, Outreach or a related discipline. The Education & Outreach Department brings PBS KIDS and local learning initiatives to our communities through workshops, outreach events, the Internet, TV and Radio. Our Education Department specializes in Early Childhood Literacy, STEM, and Wellness areas as well as the Arts.

Description:
This internship opportunity will allow the intern to participate in regional educational events as well as work within localized PBS KIDS initiatives. In addition, the student will be exposed to and participate in the behind-the-scenes activities of this region’s public broadcasting station.
The intern will work closely with the Director of Education & Outreach Initiatives and with the Community Outreach Coordinator, and be given specific responsibilities within the scope of his or her coursework. Possible responsibilities may include conducting research regarding the unique role and strengths of public broadcasting and WSKG, developing a framework for teacher toolkits based on WSKG documentaries, assisting at community outreach (family/child/teacher) events, utilizing coursework to lend expertise toward education contests and initiatives, and other duties in support of the department. Quantity and schedule of hours will be flexible and may include some nights and weekends, but the intern must have availability on weekdays during the normal business hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN – SUMMER 2013
WSKG Public Broadcasting has a summer internship opportunity available for a student currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited two- or four-year college in the field of Graphic Design or Graphic Communications. This internship will give the aspiring Graphic Designer an opportunity to be mentored in a work-based learning experience.

Description:
The intern will work closely with the Development Department, and assist the Creative Services Team with its projects. Projects may include design of brochures, sales materials, promotional materials, web graphics, logos, letterhead, and media kits. Additionally, the intern will be involved with brainstorming concepts for upcoming projects and marketing strategies. Schedule of hours will be flexible and may include some nights and weekends, but the intern must have availability weekdays during the normal business hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Qualifications:
The internship should be a requirement or option of the degree program in which the student is enrolled. The successful student will have proficiency in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, as well as strong problem solving skills and exceptional verbal communication skills. Additionally, knowledge of art history and an interest in the business of art are preferred.

BROADCAST INTERN - SUMMER 2013
WSKG Public Broadcasting, in conjunction with the New York State Broadcaster’s Association, has a paid summer internship opportunity available for a high school senior or college student interested in experiencing the operations of a radio and television public broadcasting station.
Location: Vestal, NY
Time Period: 8 weeks, July and August
Description:
This opportunity will expose the intern to cross-departmental training in Television Production & Programming, Radio Production & Programming, Engineering & IT, Finance & Human Resources, Development, Education & Outreach, and Community Engagement. The intern will be given specific responsibilities based on departmental needs, as well as on the scope of the intern’s knowledge, interests, and areas of study. The intern will also be assigned a culminating project to complete.
Qualifications:
The internship should be a requirement or option of the degree program in which the student is enrolled. The intern must be available to work 20- to 25-hours per week during the normal business hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, for a total not to exceed 180 hours. Eligible students must maintain a strong academic standing to be eligible to participate, have reliable transportation, be highly self-motivated, and computer literate.
The successful candidate will demonstrate: (1) familiarity with public broadcasting and its commitment to service; and (2) knowledge of WSKG Public Broadcasting and its role in the communities it serves.

This opportunity will allow the intern to participate in the production of Community Conversation, a public affairs, radio talk show that explores topics of interest and importance in our local communities. The intern will also be exposed to and participate in the behind-the-scenes activities of this region’s public broadcasting station.
The intern will work closely with WSKG’s Radio Department, and be given specific responsibilities within the scope of his or her coursework. Responsibilities include:
- Pre-production research and development of program ideas,
- Keeping abreast of community issues through local media and other sources,
- Live program duties, such as greeting guests and screening callers, and
- Other duties as needed.
Schedule of hours will be flexible and in accordance with the school’s program requirements. The intern must be available during the live broadcast of Community Conversation.
