WSKG
Presents:
Home Tweet Home
Building Birdhouses Contest
This spring, WSKG invited small teams of 2
to 4 students from grades five, six, and seven to enter our WSKG “Home Tweet Home” Building
Birdhouses contest. Each team submitted a drawing of an imaginary bird
and a design of the birdhouse they think meets their bird’s characteristics
and habitat.
Six teams were selected as winners (left) to go on to Phase II of the contest.
In this next phase, the winning teams will be assigned the name of a bird,
picked
randomly, by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology staff. Finalists will then design
and build a birdhouse for the bird they were assigned. Each team will be
given $75 to spend on building their birdhouse. At the end of three weeks,
the team and their coach will present their birdhouses to the staff from
the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The birdhouses will be place at the Ornithology
lab and cameras will record their usage. The activities of the contest will
be filmed by WSKG and used on television.
We have posted the wonderful winning entries for you to view and enjoy (at
left)! Stay tuned for photos and info from Phase II!
This contest is sponsored by WSKG Public Broadcasting and the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology, in partnership with Roberson Museum and Science Center and the
Waterman Conservation Center. Home Tweet Home is also made possible through
a grant from NATURE and Thirteen/WNET.
