Binghamton recyling truck ride-along

As part of our 2008 Thinking Green series, WSKG featured stories from a collaboration of northeast public radio stations.

We're looking at recycling this week as our Thinking Green series continues. Broome County is considered one of New York State's top 10 counties when it comes to recycling. WSKG's Jennifer Matoney rode along with a recycling truck in Binghamton and she filed this report.

That drop off site in Binghamton is used by all of broome county's municipal haulers. Roughy 12-thousand tons go in and out of the drop off site per year, which is about half the county's total recycling. Private haulers handle the rest. Tomorrow we tour the plant where recyclables are separated and eventually sold to be made into new materials.
