INSIDE WSKG | APRIL 2012

Celebrate the community and the earth with WSKG this April! Join us for a community-themed WSKG Fundraiser and a month of Earth Day specials on WSKG TV and Radio.

Highlights: WSKG Radio Fundraiser with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, Earth Day specials, a Community Conversation on "the winter that wasn't", a Literacy Day with our Education Team, new staff

WSKG proudly announces its Spring Radio Fundraiser starting April 21st. Your donation to WSKG will be the catalyst that will inspire a gift from Shulman Company of Elmira, New York to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. For every $100 we receive, Shulman will fund one distribution of the BackPack Program (or its equivalent). Each child in this program receives 40 packs per year, so if we can reach our fundraising goal of $120,000, we will help to ensure 1,000 kids have nutritious food to eat for the entire year. Donate today to feed your mind and feed your community!

Celebrate Earth Day with WSKG! Tune in for a month of Earth-embracing specials on WSKG TV and Radio. WSKG TV kicks things off on April 3rd at 8:00pm with American Experience: Grand Coulee Dam, following up with Nature: River of No Return on April 18th at 8:00pm, and concluding with Designing Healthy Communities: Social Policy in Concrete on April 30th at 10:00pm.  On April 24th, WSKG Radio's Community Conversation delves into "the winter that wasn't" (for more info, see below). And you can keep the whole family informed with a series of The Cat In the Hat Knows a Lot About That! specials starting April 9th at 8:30am.

This past winter felt like one of the mildest ones in memory. Is such a mild winter a sign of climate change or just an example of unusual weather? Tackle the question with Crystal Sarakas and guests on April 24h at 7:00pm during Community Conversation: The Winter That Wasn't. Submit your thoughts beforehand or during the program to CommunityConversation@wskg.org.

WSKG and the JCC in Vestal, New York invite you and your family for a special Literacy Day on April 19th. Read with Buddy the T-Rex, dress as your favorite book character for a costume parade, and sign up for your own library card!

Explore the hidden patterns and rhythms that make America work on America Revealed, a new series starting April 11th at 10:00pm on WSKG TV. Kick off with "Food Machine," and take a look at the costs of our insatiable appetite on our health and environment.

WSKG welcomes new staff this month.
