INSIDE WSKG | DECEMBER 2012

The holidays are right around the corner, but before you leave town or start preparing for the in-laws, join WSKG for two special events near home!

Highlights: an advance preview of Downton Abbey Season 3 and Southern Tier Story Day, plus a taping of Expressions with Elmar Oliveira and John Covelli, an episode of Community Conversation featuring our Youth Voice student reporters and holiday specials

Downton Abbey returns! The Great War is over and a long-awaited engagement is on, but all is not tranquil at Downton Abbey as wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues, and personal crises grip the majestic English country estate for a third thrilling season. With the return of its all-star cast plus guest star Academy Award®-winner Shirley MacLaine, Downton Abbey Season 3 airs over seven Sundays on WSKG TV beginning in January 2013. But you can kick off the season early! For this month's PBS Premiere Night, we invite you to a special event at the Phelps Mansion Museum for an advance preview of the first episode of the all-new Downton Abbey Season 3.

Southern Tier Story Day is December 1st on WSKG TV

On December 1st, join WSKG for Southern Tier Story Day. From profiles of local pioneers who've made a difference far beyond our town lines, to precedent-setting institutions, to geographical events that have shaped lives for generations, WSKG Original Documentaries gather the breadth and depth of achievement, narrative and experience inherent in our area. Sit back for a marathon of Southern Tier stories - your stories - on December 1st.

On December 18th, Community Conversation will feature original pieces from WSKG's Youth Voice student reporters. Youth Voice teaches area youth the art of sharing stories and how to find stories they want to tell. We’ll talk about how getting young people involved in sharing stories helps our community.

WSKG invites you for the holidays! On radio, hear Chanukah in Story and Song on December 11th at 8:00pm, The Great American Songbook Holiday Special on December 21st at 8:00pm and New Year's Day from Vienna on January 1st at 1:00am. The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour - the controversial surreal film made by The Beatles and broadcast by the BBC in 1967 and unavailable for decades – comes to Great Performances on December 21st at 10:00pm on WSKG TV. Before the film you’ve never seen with the songs you'll never forget, hear a story that’s never been told when Great Performances premieres Magical Mystery Tour Revisited (airing the same night at 9:00pm).

On December 13th, WSKG will host a special concert and a taping of Expressions featuring violinist Elmar Oliveira and conductor/pianist John Covelli. Oliveira expands repertoire boundaries as a champion of both contemporary music and rarely-heard works of the past, devotes considerable energy to the development of younger artists and enthusiastically supports the efforts and art of modern violin makers. Please stay tuned for broadcast information!
