THE FLOOD

We're in pieces
There's sadness in our towns.
Flooded houses, flooded stores.
Curbs of furniture, rugs, washing machines.
Harmful water, harmful air,
Electic off.
And the awful mud.
Neighbors wear masks, rubber gloves, high boots.
Professional cleaners in astronaut clothes.
Needing to help.
Giving out drinking water, cleaning kits, dry ice for refrigerators.
Needing to see, to hear the stories.
She said she painted her fingernails today, purple, it helps.
Routines, plans, they're soaked too.
