Summer Food Service Program
In the Southern Tier, more than 33,000 children participate in the free/reduced breakfast and lunch program during the school year. Less than 5,000 of these children are served by existing summer meal programs. This means the families of 28,000 children in our area had to stretch limited food budgets even further and many children missed out on nutritious meals essential to their learning and development.
There are a number of reasons why children aren't able to get to these necessary meals - the largest reason is that there simply aren't enough sites available in areas that children can easily get to.
The Summer Food Service Program is a national program of the USDA, administered through the New York State Education Department. Sponsors, like the Food Bank, then create partnerships to administer meal service at the local level. The program provides a free, nutritious meal to low income children when school is not in session.
