The STANYS Annual Conference is a premier professional development opportunity for teachers. This year’s Annual Conference will highlight approximately 200 workshops covering a broad spectrum of topics in all science content areas and at all levels of science teaching. The 118th STANYS Annual Conference speakers, activities and workshop presentations are exemplars of excellence. Our keynote speaker is Dr. Laurie Leshin, a NASA Scientist and RPI's Dean of Science, who will provide an update on the work of the Mars Rover: "Curiosity on Mars: Roving the Red Planet”. Our Fellows speaker is Frank Attwood. His in-character presentation will focus on the life of Thomas Edison: "Explore – Experiment – Expect!" Our invited speakers include:
- Dr. Bruce Moner, a senior research associate in Cornell University’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences presenting the fundamentals of climate change and its impact on the ocean.
- Dr. Jennifer Francis, a research professor at the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences, Rutgers University explaining how climate change is impacting our weather.
- Dr. Ricki Lewis, a science writer and genetic counselor, presenting on exploring the next frontier in medicine and genetics through the very personal prism of children and families gene therapy.
- Dr. Allmon’s presenting on how climate change has impacted species on our planet.
WSKG will be presenting PBS SciGirls: Engaging Girls in STEM . This is a SAR Workshop: Explore innovative resources encouraging girls in science using PBS SciGirls and Engineer Your Life programming. Discover the SciGirls Seven, proven strategies for engaging girls in STEM and how to incorporate this teaching methodology into your lessons. Explore, create and leave this hands-on workshop with new, innovative approaches and resources for your classroom. Presentation has been scheduled for session E-51 held at 9:30 A.M.-10:30 A.M. on Monday in room GRAND BALLROOM C of the Hyatt Regency.
