Kevin Gray is an artist working primarily in photography. He
received a BFA in painting & drawing from Hartwick College in
Oneonta, and recently received his MFA from the Art Institute of
Boston at Lesley University. While Kevin uses many of the modern
digital photography tools available in his work, he much prefers
traditional darkroom methods and alternative processes, such as
tintypes, Polaroid emulsion lifts, and liquid photographic
emulsions.
"Devils Den," the piece selected for Art in Motion, is from a
series of work produced in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, during Kevin's
MFA studies. The photograph is printed using a process very similar
to the 19th century tintype process. Kevin was inspired by Civil
War-era photographers such as Matthew Brady and Timothy O'Sullivan,
and also contemporary photographers who have gone back to explore
antiquarian photo processes, like Sally Mann.
