New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is giving $60,000 to local police departments to help pay for bulletproof vests.
The money will buy 175 vests, including 36 for the Binghamton Police Department, 8 for the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department and 12 for police in Watkins Glen.
Schneiderman visited Binghamton to announce the funding, which comes from civil and criminal forfeitures.
"This is replacing a federal program that was funding up to 50 percent of the cost of bulletproof vests for police departments that has been cut," said Schneiderman.
71 officers in New York have been fatally shot in the line of duty since 1984.
