The home of the Binghamton Senators – the Broome County Veterans’ Memorial Arena – is being renamed the Floyd L. Maines Veterans’ Memorial Arena.

Floyd Maines was a Navy veteran and ran the Maines Paper & Food Service in Conklin.

The agreement between the company and Broome County is for five years with the option to extend for another fifteen. The company will pay the county $75,000 a year.

County Executive Debbie Preston says the extra money is needed to cover operating costs.

“We all know that the arena over the years is hurting," says Preston. "Thanks to the $2.5 million grant that was secured by Senator Libous, we were able to give the arena a major facelift that has been long overdue. So um, but the arena still needs more money to keep this building operating, to bring in the acts that we need.”

The county will still operate the stadium and the name change goes into effect July 1.
