The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights released a list of 55 colleges and universities that have possible violations of federal law over the handling of sexual violence and harassment complaints. Binghamton University is one of the schools under investigation.
Binghamton University is one of four New York schools on the list. The others are Sarah Lawrence, Hobart and William Smith and Hunter College.
The government says releasing the list is part of a new effort to bring more transparency to the fight against sexual harassment on campuses.
The department will not disclose any specifics about the cases. The list includes investigations opened following complaints and those initiated by the Department of Education.
BU spokesperson Ryan Yarosh says in a statement that the university has fully complied with the investigation but could not provide more details.
The Education Department has also released updated guidelines for colleges and universities to address sexual violence on campus.
