Candor businessman Denver Jones has officially announced that he plans to challenge Republican State Senator Tom Libous in this fall’s Republican primary. Jones says one of his goals is to promote a business-friendly environment in New York.
Jones has not run for office before, but worked on Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney’s primary campaign against Richard Hanna in New York’s 22nd Congressional District.
Jones is a co-founder of BSU Incorporated, an electronics manufacturer in Ithaca. He says the best way to encourage business is to eliminate incentives like StartUpNY, which offers a tax holiday to some companies that expand operations in New York.
“Since no one else is running and I felt so strongly about the fact we need to get true manufacturing jobs in without using carrots," says Jones. "That we could do it properly and cut taxes for everyone and actually get rid of most of the regulation that’s occurred in the last, I don’t know how many years.”
Jones says he also wants to repeal the SAFE Act, a gun law limiting magazine size and requiring the registration of certain guns in New York.
