AUBURN, N.Y. (AP) - The Environmental Protection Agency has finalized a $20 million cleanup plan for nearly 5 square miles of contaminated ground water in Cayuga County.

The Superfund project includes farmland, woodlands, residential and commercial properties throughout Auburn, Aurelius, Fleming, Springport and Union Springs.

EPA says General Electric and other parties in a joint venture to manufacture semiconductors at the Powerex plant in Auburn will be held responsible for the cleanup cost. EPA says workers at the plant disposed of waste solvents in unlined evaporation ponds between 1959 and 1967.

The site is linked to ground water pollution from volatile organic compounds, which are hazardous to health and the environment.
