The state comptroller’s office found that hospitals overbilled the state by almost $8 million dollars for care under Medicaid.

An audit released today by Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office examined billing by 10 hospitals and concluded that they regularly charged for a more expensive type of care than patients actually needed or were given.

In one case, the auditors found a bill for 5 years of unnecessary acute care, leading to a $600,000 overpayment by the Department of Health. DiNapoli is recommending that the state recover the money and increase oversight of these types of payments.
