Retired teacher and former Vestal town supervisor Anndrea Starzak is launching her campaign to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Tom Libous.

Starzak is running on the Democratic and Working Families Party lines for New York’s 52nd District, which covers Broome, Tioga, Chenango and parts of Delaware Counties.

Starzak says, if elected, she’d invest in small and medium-sized farms and work to improve state roads.

Don Sargent lives in Owego and serves on the town board. Sargent says he doesn’t know her well, but appreciates her concern for rural infrastructure.

"As we could tell here today, we have a major truck traffic problem going through here. We can barely hear ourselves talk," says Sargent. "So, we have a lot of impacts here already. I think she knows what small communities have to deal with and she’d be willing to be a partner with us."

New York senate elections are set for November 4.
