Since 1995, the New Directions Cello Festival has celebrated musicians who are taking the cello and applying it to every genre of music other than classical. Last summer, guest contributor Krishna Ramanujan, a Science Writer at Cornell University, visited the festival in Ithaca, New York, and discovered a subculture of musicians facing the exhilarations and challenges of trying something new.
This year, the 18th annual New Directions Cello Festival will take place from June 8 to June 10 at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York.
