BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a longtime employee has been accused of stealing at least $50,000 from an upstate New York parks and recreation department.
Binghamton officials tell the Binghamton Press and Sun-Bulletin that 71-year-old John Whalen pleaded not guilty Thursday during his arraignment on a felony charge of second-degree grand larceny.
The newspaper reports Whalen was a city employee for almost 40 years and was director of the department when he resigned in November.
Now he's accused of taking the money starting in 2007 or earlier.
City officials say the investigation started in October with the discovery of irregularities in how Whalen was conducting city business. They declined to detail the thefts.
