ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Immigrants and advocates for immigrants plan to hold a rally in Albany to call on New York lawmakers to support the creation of a state Office of New Americans.
The 15th annual "Immigrants' Day of Action" is being held today in downtown Albany. Events are being held at the Empire State Plaza, with a march and rally planned for a park near the Capitol.
The New York Immigration Coalition backs Gov. Andrew Cuomo's proposal to establish a new state office dedicated to handling issues facing immigrants. The organization also supportslegislation that would ensure all students, regardless of immigration status, have access to public and private tuition assistance in New York.
The group says there are more than 4 million immigrants in New York state.
