WSKG’s Crystal Sarakas sits down with Shane Johnson, from WSKG’s History and Heritage team, to discuss a recent investigation.
In 1943, 2nd Lt. Joseph P. Congelli, a native of Hornell, New York and a member of the 8th Air Force was shot down while he returned from a mission over Osnabruck, Germany. Today, Peter Cootjans, a Dutch citizen, has adopted Lt. Congelli's name on the Wall of the Missing in the Netherlands American Cemetery. In an effort to learn more about his adopted soldier, Cootjans reached out to WSKG and the results of the investigation have led to some unexpected discoverers.
In the interview, Johnson explains what prompted the initial investigation and discusses what was uncovered.
