NY agency lifts barrier to electric vehicle growth

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York's utility regulating agency has removed a barrier to the spread of charging stations for electric vehicles.

The Public Service Commission on Thursday decided that it doesn't have jurisdiction over publicly available electric vehicle charging stations.

The PSC said its decision reduces regulatory barriers, in keeping with Gov. Andrew Cuomo's initiative to encourage further growth in the use of electric vehicles.
Automakers and charging station operators are looking for such regulatory clarification in states across the country.

Cuomo wants to see a statewide network of up to 3,000 charging stations over the next five years.

Schumer warns of flood insurance cost hikes

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer warns big increases in the national flood insurance premiums are expected.

Schumer says he's supporting a measure to delay the spike until the Federal Emergency Management Agency completes its national study which includes considering affordability.

Schumer told reporters Thursday he hopes to freeze premiums for the time the study is being done for Congress. That could take years.

He said he fears that a jump in premiums will force people to drop coverage. That could be devastating for homeowners hit by flooding and costly for the federal government which provides disaster aid.
