ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Women who were cleared of cancer in a mammography test will now have to be told if they have dense breast tissue which could mask a tumor.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the bill Monday. The Legislature passed it earlier this year. The new law requires mammography reports to advise women with dense breast tissue to discuss additional
screening, such as an ultrasound exam.

Failure to carry out the measure could result in a fine of up to $2,000.

Supporters say 40 percent of women have dense breast tissue, which has less fat and more connective tissue that appears white on a mammogram. That can hide tumors.

Connecticut, Texas and Virginia have similar notification laws.
