New York's powerful teachers' union, New York State United Teachers, will sit out of this year's governor's race.

The union says it won't endorse Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, his liberal primary challenger Zephyr Teachout, Green Party hopeful Howie Hawkins or Republican Rob Astorino.

The Green Party’s Hawkins says he was encouraged after meeting with members of the NYSUT despite missing out on the endorsement.

"I thought it went well. The fact that the Green Party is included with the unions now is a change. I think we’re getting the respect that we didn’t get in 2010."

NYSUT has sparred with Governor Cuomo over teacher evaluations, the Common Core standards and his support for charter schools. They also sat out of the 2010 race.
