ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - The Special Olympics have been given the first $3 million installment of a $12 million gift promised by billionaire businessman Tom Golisano.
The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports (http://on.rocne.ws/S6zMbz ) that the founder of the payroll company Paychex gave the check to the organization Thursday at a ceremony in Rochester, near the company's headquarters in Penfield.
The money will provide health services for people with intellectual disabilities through a program called "Healthy Communities." That will launch initially in New York, Arizona, Florida, Kansas, New Jersey, Wisconsin and the nations of Mexico, Peru, Romania, Malawi, South Africa, Malaysia and Thailand.
The goal is 1,580 clinics created over four years to serve about 260,000 athletes, train 5,000 health care professionals and award 60 grants expand the project.
