BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — More than 50 upstate New York organizations are teaming up on a campaign to warn against prescription painkiller addiction. The campaign is being kicked off at Buffalo State College on Wednesday.
Those involved include treatment groups, pharmacies, media and colleges.
Studies show that about 50 Americans die every day from a prescription drug overdose. A report by the Trust for America's Health released this week found that rates of overdose and addiction have doubled since 1999 in most states.
The western New York campaign will feature billboards saying: "Painkillers Kill More than Pain," and point people to the website, www.painkillerskill.org .
BlueCross BlueShield Chief Executive David Anderson and anti-drug advocate Dick Gallagher are among those scheduled to speak at Wednesday's launch.
