A proposed charter school in Elmira is one step closer to being approved by the state. The Finn Academy will be interviewing with the State University of New York Charter Institute to get authorization to open the school.
Maggie Thurber is one of the founders of the proposed Finn Academy. Thurber thinks the school has a good shot at approval because there are very few charter schools in upstate New York.
"If you look at the portfolio of charter schools, the majority are in larger urban settings," says Thurber. "So, to them I think it would be an exciting opportunity to work in a smaller urban community that has some of the same at-risk factors that inhibit high-level educational achievement that people don’t associate with bucolic, small towns in upstate New York."
The Finn Academy board will meet with the SUNY Charter Institute May 6. The Institute is expected to make its recommendation in June.
