While New York State has seen job growth in 26 of the past 31 months, the Southern tier has lagged behind.

Governments in the Southern Tier shed more than 5,000 public sector jobs during July, a loss of almost 9 percent of the total government workforce. Private sector job growth did not keep up with the losses, but companies added 400 jobs during July.

The statewide unemployment rate remained at 7.9 percent last month.
