The Regional Economic Development Council for the Southern Tier met in Ithaca Wednesday. As the Innovation Trail's Matt Richmond reports, the council will play a role in distributing hundreds of millions of dollars in government funding.

This year there will be more than $200 million dollars in state money awarded through the regional councils.

The 10 councils will also help select the projects that receive more than $500 million in additional state funding.

At Wednesday's meeting, members of the Southern Tier council learned about this year's schedule: applications are due by mid-summer and the money will be awarded in early fall.

Last year, projects in the southern tier received $49 million, the lowest among the councils.
