The New York State Department of Labor and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will host a job fair in Binghamton tomorrow for veterans looking for work.
The “Hire our Heroes” job fair will be held from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at the Binghamton Armory. It’s aimed at tackling the issue of unemployment among veterans. At the end of last year, the unemployment rate among veterans who have served since 9-11 was 13.2%, about 5.5% higher than the national rate.
According to the Chamber of Commerce’s Kathy Poynton, the types of employment represented at the fair will range from hourly positions to middle and upper management.
"Our employers are Corporate America, they’re small businesses, they’re local businesses, they’re national employers," she says. "So you really have a gamut of different opportunities for the veterans."
Similar events have been hosted in Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse, as well as New York City, where ninety veterans were offered a job at the event. The national “Hire our Heroes” effort has helped 100,000 veterans find work so far, with the ultimate goal of assisting 500,000.
