ROCHESTER, NY (WXXI) - If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the New York State Police and seeking personal information, don’t share anything — it’s a scam. State Police said someone is contacting people across upstate New York, identifying themselves as being from the agency and requesting personal information such as Social Security numbers. It might look legitimate, State Police said, because the number that will show up on caller ID is that of a State Police station. But the calls are not originating from the station, and State Police officials said they would never ask for this information over the phone. Police are investigating the matter.
