Finger Lakes Man Murdered In California Mass Shooting

ROCHESTER, NY (WXXI) - There is a Finger Lakes connection to one of the victims in that mass shooting in California that killed three people, and wounded at least 15 others on Sunday. The gunman also was killed.

Among the three victims, Trevor Irby, a 2012 graduate of the Romulus Central School District and a 2017 grad of Keuka College.

A statement released Monday by college president Amy Storey says that Irby was a biology major at Keuka, and she says that the college is shocked that, as she put, “This latest episode of senseless gun violence resulted in the loss of one of our recent graduates—graduates in whom we place so much hope because of their potential to create a brighter tomorrow.”

Storey sent condolences not only to Irby’s family but also to another Keuka grad, Sarah Warner, who was with Irby at the California  Garlic festival where the shooting took place. Storey says the college was relieved to learn that Warner was not physically injured in the shooting.

Storey says that when the timing is appropriate, there will be a vigil on campus on behalf of Trevor Irby and also to support Warner.

Romulus School Superintendent Martin Rotz released a statement saying that, “The school community of Romulus is deeply saddened to hear of Trevor’s tragic death at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California. All of our thoughts and prayers go out to Trevor’s family & friends as well as the many families who are suffering from this horrible tragedy.”

Rotz says Irby was a multi-sport athlete, member of the drama club, band and “friend to everyone he knew here in Romulus.”

The statement says that although Irby’s path had taken him far from home, he was still close to many of his classmates. It said that, “Trevor was the type of student who could bring joy, laughs, and comfort to everyone he met. We are proud of his accomplishments from Romulus, Keuka College, and his most recent endeavors during his time in California. On behalf of everyone at our school, our hearts go out to all the victims of this tragedy and we pray for peace and hope to come to all involved.”

Among the other people killed in the Sunday shooting was a six year old boy.
