For Second Time In Two Months, Binghamton University Student Is Killed; Suspect Now In Custody

UPDATE: A suspect in the killing of Binghamton University student Joao Souza is now in custody. According to the Press & Sun-Bulletin, Michael Roque, 20, of Massapequa, New York, was charged with second-degree murder. Roque pleaded not guilty and was remanded to the Broome County Jail.

Roque is also a student at Binghamton University. He is accused of stabbing the victim multiple times with a knife.

BINGHAMTON, NY (WSKG) - Classes at Binghamton University were canceled on Monday after the second student in two months was killed.

Freshman Joao Souza, 19, was attacked at a university residence hall Sunday night. University police responded to a call about a possible assault and found the engineering student with apparent stab wounds. He was taken to a nearby trauma center where he died.

The unidentified attacker fled on foot. It's not considered a random act.

In March, another student was found dead in a separate incident. Haley Anderson was in an off-campus apartment. She had been strangled. The suspect in that case fled to Nicaragua and Broome County is looking to have him sent back to stand trial.

Binghamton University is making counseling services available.
