Sold! Money From Sale Of Buffalo Bishop's Former Residence Will Go To Clergy Abuse Victims

BUFFALO, NY (WBFO) - The E.B. Green-designed mansion where Buffalo's Catholic bishops once resided is now in the hands of a new owner. The Diocese of Buffalo announced Tuesday that the sale of the property at 77 Oakland Place has closed.

The Diocese, in a written statement, announced the sale price is $1.5 million. The buyer is identified as Carmel Oaks LLC.

Proceeds from the sale will go into the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program, formed by the Diocese last year to support victims of clergy sexual abuse.

According to the announcement, Carmel Oaks LLC intends to use 77 Oakland Place as a residence. Bishop Richard Malone, meanwhile, has since moved into a former convent at the St. Stanislaus Parish in Buffalo's Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood.

The mansion at 77 Oakland Place was constructed in 1928 for the Forman family and sold to the Diocese in 1952.

Diocesan officials are not commenting further.
