VESTAL, NY - A proposed change to Major League Baseball’s minor league system could mean an end to minor league baseball in Binghamton.
The plan by Major League Baseball would reportedly eliminate over a quarter of minor league teams.
That includes the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets. According to a report in the New York Daily News, the Mets Double-A team would switch to Brooklyn. The Binghamton team would cease to exist in 2021.
The Rumble Ponies play at NYSEG Stadium which has undergone several upgrades in recent years, using a mix of private and public dollars. The stadium is set to host the Eastern League All-Star Game next summer.
The plan would also eliminate the New York-Penn League. That’s existed since 1939 and has had teams in Binghamton, Corning, Elmira, Hornell, and Oneonta.
