Kelles Prevails in 125th Assembly Democratic Primary

TOMPKINS COUNTY, NY (WSKG) - Anna Kelles has declared victory in the crowded Democratic primary race in the 125th Assembly district.

Kelles leads the six other candidates vying to become the Democratic nominee with all ballots counted.

“Now that every vote has been counted, from absentee to early voting to Election Day, I am humbled and honored to accept the nomination of the Democratic Party for the New York Assembly District 125," Kelles said in a written statement. ”I wish to recognize the other candidates who ran strong campaigns, and I thank them for their service to our community.”

Earlier this year, Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton announced she will retireat the end of the year. The 125th Assembly district includes Tompkins and part of Cortland counties.

Lifton did not endorse Kelles, instead supporting candidate Jordan Lesser.

Kelles has been a Tompkins County legislator since 2015. She supports universal healthcare, universal childcare and expansion of affordable housing initiatives.

Kelles will face Matthew McIntyre in the general election in November. McIntyre is running on the Libertarian line.
