Steuben County’s most recent contract with the U.S. Marshals Service allows the Steuben County jail to continue to house federal detainees, including those held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Constituents packed the legislative chambers in Bath and voiced their concerns last week.

Residents in the city of Corning voiced concerns about agreements between Steuben County and Immigration and Customs Enforcement during the Sept. 2 city council meeting.

Terminated state correction officers will be eligible for hire in local government positions on or after April 10.

“We want to offer pay and benefits that make Steuben County a very competitive place to work,” said County Manager Jack Wheeler.

A Yates County Supreme Court judge sided with the Steuben County sheriff in late November and said the county’s removal of the sheriff’s indemnification was unlawfully enacted and invalid.
