Hamilton-Gibson Productions will offer live sign language interpreters for an upcoming performance of Silent Sky at the Coolidge Theater.

The play is about real-life astronomer Henritta Leavitt, whose work led to our ability to map the stars and learn more about the scope of our universe, and our place in it. Henreitta lived with hearing loss, and in the play we see her utilizing a hearing device. This production will feature an ALS interpreter for the matinee performance on Sunday, May 12 at 2:30pm. Tickets should be reserved in advance if you would like to attend this performance.

Through any rehearsal process, actors go on a journey with the story and with their characters. The cast is excited to share this journey with both hearing audiences and those who communicate via ASL. Jayna Brodnicki, playing Henreitta's sister Margaret remarks, "Silent Sky explores the struggle between work, life, family, and the stars. It provides a glimpse into a piece of history that changed the world's understanding and view of the universe." Megan Gallant, playing Henreitta says,“I’ve never cried this much doing a play, or laughed this much, or enjoyed my co-stars this much. This has truly been an amazing experience, and I have even learned a lot about astronomy.” Natalie Himmelberger, playing fellow astronomer Willamina Flemming says, "My favorite part about being a part of this show is watching the impact it has had on our cast. There have been very few productions that I have been a part of that have had such a strong emotional effect on the actors. It's an emotional story, and like Williamina says, "It's life. Ridiculous and miraculous..."

Along with the emotional journey of the characters, the actors have had the unique opportunity to play real-life people, which bring another layer of interest to the story. Lilace Guignard, playing astronomer Annie Cannon remarks, "This is the first time I've played an historical figure and finding out about these women--Henrietta, Annie, and Williamina--has been fascinating. Knowing they really had these struggles and accomplishments gives me an additional investment in what I'm saying and doing on stage. And a greater admiration for the playwright who figured out how to weave facts with empathy and humor. So much humor!"

Performances of Silent Sky are May 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 7:30pm, and May 12 at 2:30pm (with ASL) at the Coolidge Theater, 104 Main St. in Wellsboro. Tickets can be purchased at www.HamiltonGibson.org or by calling 570-724-2079. Reservations are recommended.
