Introduction to the Appalachian Dulcimer

Introduction to the Appalachian Dulcimer

Hosted by Wayne Harbert, a lifelong “non-musician” who dabbles in dulcimer making, this session will be a hands-on opportunity to experience the feel and sound of the Appalachian dulcimer. Join us to learn about an instrument whose history links medieval musical theory with rural American ingenuity, and whose design properties make it an ideal musical instrument for us non-musicians. Information about resources, the basic tunings, methods of playing, and reading (and writing) dulcimer tablatures will be provided. We will also explore the possibility of forming a local dulcimer learners’ group. No experience necessary. Young and old are welcome (patient musicians too—most especially if they have experience with dulcimers). We will all learn from each other. We will be working with dulcimers made by the facilitator, but if you have one sitting around, you are encouraged to bring it too. A dulcimer will be made available to interested participants through the library for loan. Registration recommended but not required.
