Meet Superhero 'Gem Girl' in Elmira Girl's Winning Story

Caylee Hinman won 1st place in the Second Grade category in WSKG's local 2016 PBS KIDS Writers Contest. Caylee is 8 years old and lives in Elmira, NY with her mom and dad.  She enjoys school, gardening, rocks and gems, building with Legos, baking, reading, and most of all writing stories!  Caylee wrote her first book at the age of 3 titled “Happy Fall” inspired by the changing seasons.  She has been writing books ever since.  When Caylee grows up she is thinking of becoming an author. Here's a Q&A we held with her!:

What is your story about?  Can you summarize it in just a sentence or two? My story is about a battle between good and evil, where Gem Girl and Diamond Dog fight Hot Dog Guy and Pickle Poodle to save the city. How did you come up with the main character of Gem Girl? I invented the main character Gem Girl during the 2015 Summer Reading Program at our local library that had a Super Hero theme.  During one of their activities at the library, we were able to create our own Super Hero and their costume.   I came up with Gem Girl because I love rocks and gems.

Are you working on any additional stories right now? I am currently in the thinking process for my next story that is going to be another story in the Gem Girl series.

Thank you for sharing this story with WSKG! How did you hear about the Contest? We heard about the WSKG writing contest through a friend in 2014 and I sent in a story for the 2015 contest and won 3 rd place.

Which part did you enjoy most -- writing the story or making drawings that accompanied the plot? I enjoyed writing the story the best because I like to use my imagination.

Is there anything else you'd like to share? I am planning to send in my story "Gem Girl Like Her Hot Dogs with Ketchup" to a publisher to become a published children's book.
