Student Organizer For School Shooting Memorial Continues Sharing Message Of Change

HORSEHEADS, NY (WSKG) -- On Saturday morning, student activists will again protest for safety in schools and for tighter gun control. It’s called the March for Our Lives. Kids and families will be marching in Washington D.C. and across the nation. One march is happening in Corning, New York.

Kayla Mauk plans to go. She’s a senior at Horseheads High School. For the National School Walkout, Mauk helped her school coordinate a memorial for Parkland shooting victims. She says students had the choice to stay in their homerooms, but the auditorium was full with maybe a thousand people in attendance. For Mauk, it really put things into perspective.

"I think doing it made everything feel more real," she explained. "Like this really happened."

WSKG’s Monica Sandreczki met Mauk for a chat at her school, in the auditorium where the memorial was held. The district’s community information specialist, Susan Pirozzolo, was also there.
