CORNING, NY (WSKG) - Mass testing for COVID-19 continues in Steuben County nursing homes.
County officials announced this week that hundreds of tests will take place at three more facilities. Testing had already occurred at three other nursing homes after a surge in COVID-19 cases.
Hornell Gardens, Elderwood at Hornell and the Fred and Harriett Taylor Health Center in Bath have been the predominant hotspots for the virus.
Steuben County officials said they're working to find any additional problem areas, especially among staff.
“If they test positive, we can get them isolated for the 14 days and hopefully reduce and stop the transmission of the virus within the nursing home,” explained Public Health Director, Darlene Smith, during a press call.
Steuben Center For Rehabilitation And Nursing in Bath, and Corning Center For Rehabilitation And Nursing in Corning will be tested next week.
Absolut Care of Three Rivers in Painted Post completed testing this week.
According to Smith, 250 tests are being, or will be, conducted at each facility.
Steuben County continues to see positive COVID-19 cases with nearly 250 confirmed and about 40 deaths, many in nursing homes.
The death toll is the highest in the region.
