Voters cast ballots in primaries across New York on Tuesday. General elections will take place November 4.
Here are some of the preliminary results for primary elections in Tompkins and Broome counties:
Tompkins County
Primary results for Tompkins County are in following a primary election season that saw many open elected positions but few competitive races.
In Ithaca, primary spots for all common council wards were up for grabs. However, only the 1st, 3rd and 5th Wards had contested Democratic primaries.
Wards 2 and 4 went to the only Democratic candidates running for nomination, Joe Kirby and Robin Trumble respectively.
In Ward 1, Jorge DeFendini, a former Ithaca alderperson, won the Democratic nomination. DeFendini previously represented Ithaca’s 4th Ward, but lost re-election in 2023 after a surprise write-in campaign from current Alderperson Patrick Kuehl.
In Ward 3, Pat Sewell won the Democratic nomination. Preliminary results show that Ward 5 candidate G.P. Zurenda is leading runner up Hannah Shvets by six votes.
Iris Packman won the Democratic nomination for Tompkins County Legislative District 3, representing part of the city of Ithaca. Daniel Nolan ran unopposed in the special election for the seat, and will hold the position until the end of 2025.
The Democratic nomination for Tompkins County 13th Legislative District went to Irene Weiser.
Primary candidates for the remaining 12 open seats in the legislature ran unopposed.
In Danby, Mark Pruce and Zachary Larkins won the Democratic primary for town councilperson positions. Christine M. Seamon and Michael T. Corbett won the Republican nominations for town council in Newfield.
