String Theory is a musical collective featuring Ariana Kim, Rick Manning, Tim Ball, Tom Hodgson and Dave Davies performing an eclectic blend of music from a variety of fiddle music traditions - Bluegrass, Old Time, Celtic, and Western Swing.
The ensemble features Cornell faculty and Juilliard graduate Ariana Kim, a fine violinist with classical, contemporary, and many traditional and folk fiddle styles. Fellow fiddler-teacher Tim Ball is a compelling artist, well-versed in Irish, English, Canadian, and Americana fiddling traditions and has recently released a new album featuring nearly-forgotten tunes from New York State. Group founder and fiddler-mandolinist Rick Manning is known for his versatility in country, bluegrass, swing, and contradance styles; he hosts Winter Village Music and has toured extensively with the Falling Waters Trio. Touring extensively as a contra musician and equally comfortable in jazz and folk settings, bassist Dave Davies has been a staff artist at the Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Festival for more than 30 years. Known for his soulful folk stylings, guitarist Tom Hodgson has been providing rhythm and harmony to music and dance ensembles throughout North America for more than four decades, having toured and recorded widely with leading fiddlers Randy Miller and George Wilson, among others. Together these five string players come together in the Tompkins County area to bring joyful, fun, and eclectic programs to their audiences.
