"The Ladies of St. Thomas African Episcopal Church, the 1864 Sanitary Fair, Louisa Jacobs and Defiance" Presentation by Susan Goodier PhD.
Susan Goodier, PhD., will discuss the activism of African American women on behalf of Black soldiers during the Civil War, raising money for the sick and wounded. This presentation will explore the repercussions prompted by the advertising of the fair, the biographies of the participants, and it will provide context for women's fundraising activism, highlighting the deliberate defiance of 3 levels of authority when they sent their donations to Louisa Jacobs of the Jacobs School in Alexandria, VA.
