'Algo' Captures Abstract/Experimental Award in Serling Film Fest

Isabella Mesko is a senior at Emma Willard School in Troy, NY. She has studied film independently at school since her freshman year and created personal video projects since her childhood.

What is your film about? Can you summarize in a few sentences? 'Algo' is a short experimental film which implicitly comments on such subject matter as feminine adolescence, domestic violence, and love.

How did you come up with the idea for your film?

I drew from personal experience, the experiences of my friends, and literature surrounding what it means to 'love properly' created during the 1950s. This literature is also where the audio, a driving force for the theme of the piece, came from.

Can you talk about your approach to the story and the technical elements you used?

I shot the film on a DSLR camera in the photo studio at my school. I planned out what visual effects I thought might be interesting to create, focusing particularly on green screen chroma-key effects, which I created using the green screen in the studio and green bodypaint. I used Premiere Pro's chroma key capabilities to create these layering effects.

Thank you for sharing your film with WSKG! How did you hear about the Festival?

Through my film & video teacher.

Which part of this filmmaking experience did you enjoy most?

The editing! Editing videos is always my favorite aspect since I have true, individual creative freedom in editing.
