VESTAL (WSKG) - Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell won’t seek re-election this fall.

Cornwell made the announcement via a written statement:

“In my view, it would be dishonest to run for another four-year term, which I do not intend to complete, or, to exploit the power of the District Attorney’s Office to advance personal goals,” he said.

Cornwell didn’t elaborate on what those "personal goals." A call to his office was forwarded to a press contact and not immediately returned.

The announcement comes a day after Cornwell’s office announced overdose deaths in Broome County had been cut by more than half between 2017 and 2018. He said that proves efforts his office has taken are working.

The Republican was elected Broome County District Attorney in 2015.
