Cornell Students Return To Campus In September

TOMPKINS COUNTY, NY (WSKG) - Cornell University announced plans for students to return to its Ithaca campus in September.*

In a statement released on Tuesday, Cornell President Martha Pollack said in-person classes will begin September 2. Pollack said the decision came as a result of three "reactivation committees," made up of faculty, students, university staff and leadership.

"Students will be expected to observe strict behavioral requirements and participate in a comprehensive testing program designed to detect and contain any spread of COVID-19," according to the statement.

Cornell researchers determined that by combining on-campus and online classes, the University would have greater control over student behavior, which could help control the spread of any COVID-19 outbreak.

Students will be required to undergo regular screening and testing for COVID-19. If students test positive, Cornell intends to isolate the students and those in close contact to them to limit the spread of the virus.

The plan calls for students to attend classes on campus until the Thanksgiving break then remain home to complete their classes and exams online. The spring semester will have a delayed start.

According to the statement, further details and a series of town hall meetings to answer area residents’ questions will be announced next week.
