Camp at Home!

Christine Thompson plays music on her phone for her kids at their rental home in Milwaukee. The family is facing eviction in the next week or two.

Who says you can't create a fun camp-like atmosphere in your home? PBS KIDS has great examples of camp-models that have a TON of activities that will last you at least a week! From reading to math to science to engineering, these camps will be a great addition to your at-home-learning model. (P.S. You don't have to use them as a full schedule, you CAN pick and choose activities that work for you and your family!)

1. Super WHY! Reading Camp

Each day at Reading Camp, children transform into one of the SUPER WHY characters and take part in reading-based, branded SUPER WHY crafts, games, and songs that practice the targeted early literacy skill of the day: Monday = letter identification, Tuesday = rhyming with word families, Wednesday = letter sounds and spelling, and Thursday = vocabulary and comprehension, Friday = celebrating the accomplishments of the week. The site has all of the information you need to set up and run a Reading Camp, including the curriculum for Weeks 1, 2, and 3 along with the accompanying materials, music, and videos.

2.  Peg + Cat Camp

Peg + Cat Camp engages preschoolers in fun, informal learning experiences in math and problem-solving. By incorporating friendly PBS characters, engaging activities, and social-emotional strategies, children learn to work as a team, creatively approach problems, use mistakes as learning opportunities, and persist through challenges.

3. Odd Squad "Be The Agent" Camp

Each downloadable playbook provides the lesson plans for the 5 days of the Odd Squad 'Be the Agent' Camp. The camp provides campers with fun STEM-based hands-on problem-solving opportunities as they train to become Odd Squad Agents.

3. Sensational Science Camp
A camp for kids to engage in science inquiry and engineering design with Ruff Ruffman. This guide provides the curriculum, background information, and supports necessary to lead five sessions - mixtures, materials, friction, structures, and a celebration of what you've learned.

4. Design Squad Inventing Green Club
In Design Squad Global (DSG) clubs, kids explore engineering through fun-packed, high energy, hands-on activities, such as designing and building an emergency shelter or a structure that can withstand an earthquake. There is both a 6-week club guide and a 12-club guide available. Remember: You don't have to use all of the activities!
