Grisaille is a classic painting technique that uses only monochromatic shades to creat a detailed tonal underpainting. By separating light, shadow, and form from color, artists can focus purely on value and dimension before layering transparent colors on top.

The workshop will cover concepts of illumination, including aspects of light and shadow, with the goal of achieving sculptural weight and providing a dimensional quality to your work. We will utilize the concepts of Chiroscuro and grisaille painting techniques. In addition, we’ll discuss practical lighting situations, core tenets of paint and value, paint application, traditional techniques, and health-based art-making approaches. The Grisaille workshop is designed for beginners and intermediates.

Supplies needed: Raw Umber oil paint, white oil paint, brush, canvas, palette.
