VESTAL, NY (WSKG) — Broome County will bring residents COVID-19 vaccines “on demand” starting this week. It is the county’s latest effort to get residents vaccinated amid slowing and unfilled appointments.

The new program allows residents to request vaccination pods for groups of 10 people or more. The shot comes in vials with about 10 doses each.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said the pods can happen anywhere. That includes bridal showers, churches and little league games.

“There’ll be no cost to this. It’s absolutely free,” Garnar said. “You get the ten people, we’ll come with the vaccines.”

County paramedics and public health nurses will staff the pods.

As of Wednesday, close to 60 percent of adults in Broome County have received at least one dose, and 48 percent of the county’s overall population has received at least one dose.

The county will still offer community-based vaccine clinics, as well as ones partnered with businesses and schools.

A form to submit pod requests is live on the county’s website.
